Holes and tunnels
Cone-shaped holes 3 to 5 inches wide are armadillos. Raised ridges are moles. Large burrows with mounds of dirt are groundhogs, and quarter-sized holes near walls are chipmunks.
Tracks and scat
Raccoon tracks look like tiny hands. Opossum tracks have a thumb that points out. Fox and coyote tracks are oval with four toes and claw marks, and deer leave heart-shaped split hooves.
Chewed plants
Clean, angled cuts on stems are rabbits. Ragged torn tips are deer. Bark chewed off at the base of a young tree is often voles or rabbits.
