Listen to the time of day
Animals that move at sunrise and sunset are usually squirrels, which are active in the daytime. Noises that start after dark point to raccoons, flying squirrels, rats, mice or bats.
Listen to the sound
Light scampering is usually mice or squirrels. Heavy thumping and dragging is a raccoon. Squeaking and fluttering around dusk is often bats. Scratching in the walls at night is usually rats.
Look for signs
Check the soffits, vents and roof edges for chewed holes and stains. Droppings, torn insulation and a smell like ammonia are common signs of a longer stay. Stay out of the attic if you cannot do it safely.
