Protect Backyard Chickens From Raccoons, Foxes and Weasels

A coop that stops a dog may not stop a raccoon. Predators are patient, strong and clever.

A coop that stops a dog may not stop a raccoon. Predators are patient, strong and clever.

Build it tight

Use hardware cloth, not chicken wire, because predators can tear chicken wire. Bury a mesh apron 12 inches deep and cover the run on top.

Lock it well

Raccoons can open simple latches. Use a two-step latch or a carabiner, and close the coop at dusk.

Reduce temptation

Pick up feed at night, collect eggs daily and clear brush and woodpiles near the coop.
