Protected species
The gray bat, Indiana bat and northern long-eared bat are federally protected, and others have declined because of white-nose syndrome.
The pup season
Bats have one pup a year, born from late May into July. Pups cannot fly for several weeks. Blocking the entrance then traps them inside.
The right way
Exclusion is done with one-way exits outside the pup season. After the bats are out, every gap is sealed and the area is cleaned.
