Found a Baby Animal? What to Do (and Not Do)

Baby animals look helpless, but their mothers are often nearby. Picking one up can do more harm than good.

Fawns and rabbits

A fawn alone in tall grass is usually fine, because the mother comes back a few times a day. Baby rabbits in a nest are cared for at dawn and dusk.

Birds

Fledglings hopping on the ground are learning to fly and their parents are watching. Leave them unless they are in danger.

When to call

If an animal is injured, in danger, cold and crying for hours or its mother is dead, call us or a licensed wildlife rehabilitator.
