Roof and attic

Check shingles, ridge vents, gable vents and soffits. Cap the chimney and trim limbs back 6 to 8 feet.

Garage and crawl space

Make sure garage doors seal tightly. Cover crawl space vents with heavy mesh, and check pipe and wire entries for gaps.

Yard

Secure trash, bring in pet food, raise firewood and keep a clear zone around the foundation. Fence gardens and coops.
